In 2015, Rosa Linda’s Mexican Café, a neighbor and friend of the The Squeaky Bean, closed down after 30 years of business. In closing, they had to end a longstanding tradition of feeding Denver’s homeless and hungry on Thanksgiving. Recognizing the need, The Squeaky Bean team partnered with We Don't Waste, and picked up the torch to make sure the tradition continued. In their first year, they provided 378 hot meals to DHA residents. This year the Squeaky Bean Restaurant prepared and delivered over 3,000 hot meals on Thanksgiving Day - 1,261 to DHA residents, over half of which were section 8/HCV!
With the generous support of Mike Goddard, the Osage Cafe, and outside donations, community Thanksgiving gatherings were held at eight senior and disabled buildings. Between 30 and 80 residents gathered at each site to enjoy Thanksgiving meals with their fellow residents. While DHA provided the turkey, potatoes, and stuffing, residents contributed to the meal, with pies, cobblers, sweet potatoes, green beans, rolls, and more!
Many of our residents would not have had a holiday visit or meal if it weren't for our generous community partners you can read about below.
