"It's time for one of our favorite traditions at Next. For the sixth year in a row, your Word of Thanks micro-giving campaign will make Christmas happen for thousands of kids in Denver's public housing.
This week's Word of Thanks micro-giving campaign supports Friends of Denver Housing Authority (DHA). It'll support the nonprofit's holiday gift drive as many families are struggling to make ends meet, and with rising costs, food insecurity and limited resources, the joy of giving can feel out of reach.
It used to be kids there got gifts on a first-come, first-serve basis. Then, your generosity came along and changed the game for those families in need.
For years, you've covered the cost of a gift for every child in Denver's public housing, and your generosity has spilled beyond that group of kids.
If we cover the cost of all those gifts, Friends of DHA will next cover the cost of gifts for kids in their low-income housing tax credit program. If we cover that, they'll start reaching out to families in their dispersed housing units around the city."

Senior Ball 2025
Plenty of hooting, hollering, and line dancing lit up our annual Senior Ball, complete with a festive western theme. This cherished event brings together older adult residents and DHA staff for an evening filled with dinner, dancing, and meaningful connection.
More than just a celebration, the Senior Ball serves as an important opportunity to strengthen community ties and support the well-being of older adults who may be more vulnerable to social isolation. Through shared meals, joyful movement, and heartfelt conversations, we continue to nurture a sense of belonging that extends far beyond the final song.

Press - Denver Housing Authority graduates celebrate economic self-sufficiency milestone
"DENVER — Five Denver Housing Authority residents graduated from a five-year economic self-sufficiency program, receiving certificates and checks ranging from $5,000 to $56,000 to help them achieve homeownership and financial independence.
The Family Self-Sufficiency program, funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, enables participants to establish escrow savings while increasing their income over five years. As residents' earnings grow, their rent increases to 30% of their income, with the difference between their original rent and new rent deposited into an escrow account."

Event Press: Friends of DHA Raise More Than $100k
"Denver Housing Authority (DHA) and its nonprofit arm, Friends of DHA, announced this week that $115,000 was raised, 132 percent more than last year, to benefit resident services at the annual Wall of Fame fundraiser on June 26, 2025. The funds will be directed toward the core focus areas of youth development, economic self-sufficiency, healthy living, digital inclusion, and community building.
“We are grateful to everyone who supported the Wall of Fame fundraiser,” DHA Chief Executive Officer and Friends of DHA Chairman Joaquín Cintrón Vega said. “This event brought together community members, partners, and supporters to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of DHA residents and we applaud the winners.”
Celebrating Resident Achievements
Each year, the Wall of Fame honors residents who demonstrate outstanding leadership, growth, and commitment to community. This year’s award recipients included:

The Wall of Fame event generated significant financial support and heightened awareness of Friends of DHA whose mission is dedicated to empowering low-income families and individuals, guiding them towards self-sufficiency and independent living. The night highlighted just how vital these programs are. The average family living in DHA’s public housing earns less than $10,000 per year, and more than half of the residents are children. Friends of DHA donations connect families to vital supportive services and life-changing programs.
The success of the Wall of Fame was made possible through the generous support of community partners, with special recognition to this year’s Platinum Sponsors, together contributing $38,000:

What an incredible weekend at the Denver Colfax Marathon (May 17/18)!
Our Friends of DHA team showed up in style with our “I Run with Friends” race shirts, and we couldn’t be more proud of the energy, support, and love we received from the community. Over 500 people participated in our booth activity, with thousands more seeing our nonprofit name for the very first time!

This exciting honor comes with a $250 donation from the Denver Colfax Marathon—and a chance at even more if we win the final vote in June.

Senior Ball 2024
On October 17th, Friends of DHA supported the annual Senior Ball, a night filled with laughter, music, and joy for 200 of Denver’s older adults. Beyond the dancing and dinner, this event brings together residents to combat social isolation, promote emotional well-being, and strengthen connections that are key to healthy aging.

"DENVER – Monday, August 5, 2024 – The Denver Housing Authority (DHA) and its nonprofit arm, Friends of DHA, announced today that a two-day Economic Empowerment Summit, dedicated to equipping low-income DHA and Denver residents with essential financial management skills, career tools, and homeownership opportunities, will be held September 5 and September 12, 2024.
Annie Hancock, DHA director of resident and community connections and Executive Director of Friends of DHA commented on the importance of the summit: 'The Economic Empowerment Summit is a vital initiative that underscores our commitment to uplifting our community. By providing access to essential resources and tools, we empower individuals to achieve financial stability and success in their careers and homeownership journeys.'
The summit will begin with a virtual event on September 5, 2024 from 2 p.m. - 6 p.m. featuring workshops on financial literacy, job readiness training, and homebuyer education. The event will culminate in an in-person resource fair on September 12, 2024 from 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. at 1035 Osage St, Denver, CO 80204. Additionally, there will be a clothing drive providing new and gently used adult professional attire, free of charge, to support job seekers in their interview preparations. The resource fair is free and open to the public, with no registration required.

"DENVER — A 75-year-old woman who uses a wheelchair to get around the city is the person behind the pitch for $400,000 in sidewalk repairs in her neighborhood.
Phyllis Mack has to negotiate her safety every time she leaves her home. The sidewalks around her home are often too narrow, or too damaged to safely maneuver her wheelchair. It's even more treacherous after snow.
Frequently, Mack ends up using the street to travel, instead.
“They need to be widened and smoothed,” she said about the sidewalks in her Athmar Park neighborhood. “So I don’t have to go out into the street and get hit by a car.”
Mack lives in Walsh Manor, a Denver Housing Authority property for seniors and people with disabilities. She’s not the only one struggling to get around in this neighborhood..."
